For week 4 this term, I am learning about the Tangiwai rail disaster that occurred on a Christmas Eve in 1953. That’s all I know though and so I guess it’s time for me to study :)

I think it is a disaster that it happened in a Christmas eve on 1953 and it included a train
2. What do I think I will find out about this disaster?
I think I will find out how the disaster happened, how many people died and how many people survived

It happened at the top of Mt Ruapehu
3. When did the Tangiwai Railway disaster take place?
It happened on 1953 December 24
4. How did the train driver know to put on his emergency breaks?
Because he saw a man waving with a torch warning him to stop
5. Why did the Queen give out medals?
She gave medals to 4 people showing their bravery
6. What was installed after the Tangiwai Railway Disaster?
They installed an early warning system on the Whangaehu
